– 작은 물길이 만들어낸 문화 –
– Traces carved by small streams –

프라이부르크에는 중세 건물만큼이나 상징적인 작은 수로 베힐레가 흐른다. 고딕 양식의 건물이 즐비한 구도심을 감싸는 이 물길은 프라이부르크를  가로지르는 드라이잠  강을 구도심 북쪽 수문으로  유입시켜 만든 작은 인공수로다.폭 50cm, 총 연장 약 16km에 달하며 800년 이상의 역사를 담고있다. 초기에는 도로 중앙으로 형성되었으나, 산업혁명 뒤 급격히 증가하는 인구와 교통의 불폄함으로인해 1850년 경도로 중앙에서 가장자리로 옮겨진다.

In Freiburg, as symbolic as its medieval buildings, flows the small waterway known as the Bächle. Winding through the old town lined with Gothic architecture, this stream channels water from the Dreisam River into the city through a northern gate. Measuring about 50 centimeters in width and stretching roughly 16 kilometers in total length, it carries more than 800 years of history. Originally laid out in the middle of the streets, the Bächle was moved to the edges around 1850 due to the rapid population growth and traffic congestion brought by the Industrial Revolution.

베힐레는 19세기 중반에 이르기까지 속적으로 프라이부르크 시내에 만들어진다.  오랜 기간 중요한 수자원 공급원으로 가축음용수, 생활수, 소방용수로 사용된다. 1944년 영국군의 폭격이 이루어지던 시기에 도시 전역에 발생한 화재는 베힐레를 통해 신속히 진압될 수 있었다. 파괴된 건축물을 원형으로 복구하던 당시 정책에 따라 베힐레도 중세 당시의 원형으로 복원된다. 70년대부터 시작된 생태친화적 도시개발은 베힐레의 기후조절기능을 재조명했다.

The Bächle continued to be developed throughout Freiburg until the mid-19th century. For a long time, it served as an important source of water, used for livestock, daily needs, and firefighting. During the British bombing raids of 1944, fires that broke out across the city were quickly extinguished thanks to the Bächle. In line with the city’s policy of restoring destroyed buildings to their original form, the Bächle, too, was rebuilt to reflect its medieval design. Beginning in the 1970s, with the rise of eco-friendly urban development, the Bächle’s role in regulating the city’s climate was rediscovered and appreciated anew.

베힐레에 발이 걸려넘어진 사람은 프라이부르크 주민과 결혼하게 된다는 속담이 될 정도로 역사에 많은 영향을 미쳤음을 짐작케 한다. 이 작은 물길이 만들어낸 문화는 작은 도시 속 독일인의 삶에 가장 깊숙이 흐르고 있다. 아이와 노인, 동물을 구별할 것 없이 모두 베힐레에 발을 담그며 하나가 된다. 쓰레기 한 점 떠다니지 않는 이 깨끗한 물길은 오랜 역사 속에서 모두가 하나되었다는 강력한 증거다.

There is even a saying that if someone trips and falls into the Bächle, they will end up marrying a resident of Freiburg — a hint at how deeply this little waterway has shaped the city’s history. The culture created by this stream runs through the very heart of German life in this small city. Children, the elderly, and even animals all share in it, dipping their feet into the water and becoming one. Spotless, with not a single piece of litter floating by, the Bächle stands as living proof of a long history of togetherness.
