건대 후문 골목 어귀에서 조용히 문을 연 카페, 704호. 어느새 이곳이 문을 연 지도 5년이 넘었다. 커피 맛도 좋지만, 그보다 더 기억에 남는 건 이곳만의 분위기다. 자주 오가는 손님들 사이에 자연스럽게 인사가 오가고, 대화가 이어지는 풍경. 처음엔 혼자 왔다가도, 어느새 동네친구를 만들게 되는 그런 공간이다.

Tucked away in a quiet alley near the back gate of Konkuk University, Room 704 opened its doors without much fuss. Now, it’s been over five years. The coffee? It’s great. But what really lingers is the atmosphere. There’s something warm and familiar here regulars greet each other like old friends, conversations spark naturally, and people who once came in alone often leave with a new neighbor to wave to next time. It’s not just a café. It’s a little corner of the neighborhood where connections grow, one cup at a time.

왠지모르게 눈길이 가는 704호라는 카페이름은 가장 좋아하는 밴드 전기뱀장어의 곡 이름에서 따왔다고 한다. 락페스티벌에서 우연히 무대를 보고 팬이 된 큰 사장 BOB은 카페 곳곳에 전기뱀장어를 자연스럽게 녹여냈다. 와이파이 이름부터 시그니처 메뉴까지 카페 곳곳에 전기뱀장어가 이스터에그로 남아있다.

The name “Room 704” has a way of catching your eye. Turns out, it’s the title of a song by Big boss BOB’s favorite band, “Electric Eel”. He became a fan after randomly catching their set at a rock festival, and since then, he’s quietly tucked little tributes to the band all over the café from the Wi-Fi name to the signature drinks, “Electric Eel” lives on here like little Easter eggs waiting to be found.

BOB은 사실 커피와는 전혀 상관없는 곳에서 일을 시작했다. 처음 일했던 것은 어느 건축설계 사무실이다. 야근은 당연했고, 집에 들어가는 날보다 사무실 불을 마지막으로 끄는 날이 더 많았다. 당시에 함께 일하던 소장님에게 늦둥이 아이가 생겼는데, 아이 얼굴도 제대로 못 보고 바쁘게 지내는 소장님의 모습을 보며, ‘저게 내 미래일 수도 있겠구나’ 하는 생각이 들었다고 한다. 그때부터 BOB은 앞으로 어떤 일을, 어떻게 해야 할지 진지하게 고민했다.

BOB didn’t start out in coffee. His first job was at an architecture firm, where late night overtime was just part of the routine. He’d often turn off the lights last, long after everyone else had gone. One day, his boss who had just had a baby mentioned he barely saw his newborn’s face. That moment stuck with BOB. He thought, “That could be me one day.” And that’s when he started seriously asking himself: What kind of life do I want to live and what kind of work will get me there?

퇴사 후 가장 먼저 떠올린 건 카페였다. 의외인 건 카푸치노와 라떼도 구별할 줄 모를 정도로 커피와 거리가 멀었다는 점이다. 이름이 이쁘면, 그 이유만으로 음료를 먹는 정도였다니 얼마나 카페와 거리가 있었는지 예상이 된다. 하지만 카페라는 공간에서 풍기는 여유롭고 멋진 분위기, 그리고 무엇보다 사람들과 함께 어울리며 일할 수 있을 거라는 기대.그게 커피라는 낯선 세계로 발을 들이게 한 결정적인 이유였다.

He used to choose drinks just because the names sounded nice. That’s how far he was from the world of coffee. But there was something about the café vibe relaxed, cool, inviting. And more than anything, the idea of working with people, not just around them, really stuck. That was what pulled him into this unfamiliar world of coffee.

BOB이 처음 커피 일을 시작한 곳은 스타벅스였다. 이곳에서 커피에 대해 더 배워가며 ‘버디’개념을 알게 되었다고 한다. 직원과 단골 손님 사이의 특별한 관계를 쌓아가는 작은 신뢰. 스타벅스에서 배운 ‘버디’는 704를 시작한 뒤 카페의 정체성을 형성하는데 많은 도움을 줬다고 한다. 이제는 704호만의 버디들과 함꼐 다양한 이벤트를 진행하고 있다.

BOB’s first real step into the world of coffee was at Starbucks. It was there that he started learning the craft and more importantly, discovered the industry concept of a “buddy.” A buddy is that quiet, familiar bond between a staff member and a regular. A sense of trust built over time. That idea stuck with him. When he opened Room 704, the buddy concept helped shape the heart of the café. Now, 704 has its own crew of buddies and together, they make this place more than just a spot for coffee. Events, memories, little moments they’re all shared here.
